Pitching Tips
In public relations, journalism, advertising etc. it's all about catching the attention of your viewer. Just as a public relations practitioner or anyone on the inside of the creative world has the important job of catching the eye of a journalist through their pitch. One thing that I love about this profession is that no one is expected to be the same. Individually, what you are expected to do is bring your own creativity to the table. For the pitch, in order to succeed, there is a big emphasis on creativity and organization. You need to know the story, organize the details and also understand who you are pitching to. Writers need to seem more than compelling thought, but an image of a complete, compelling story. Paint the picture! Sell the story! In this profession, you may only get a few words to send it home with the writer - make it count.
Thinking of the big picture for Searcy Public Library, the pitches are important to the success of the project. On behalf of the library ahead of a vote on a sales tax to fund a new building, the pitch would not need to be focused on the sales taxes increasing, but the importance of the library. The library is much more than a building; the librarians, parents and children know that, the writers you are pitching need to know that. If you present the pitch about the increase in sales tax, there will be instant enemies; however, if you give the chance to the readers to see the library in a different light, they won't see it as just a building, but an inspiration and home of imagination. So in the pitch, you present it simply with a bit of impact to the writers; they are your chance to win over the community.
